Peru – Oceans to Andes

We begin our journey in Cusco, a vibrant city that thrives on tourism and was once the capital of a mighty empire. There, our group will acclimatize to the sights, smells, sounds, and altitude of the region. We’ll hit the city’s cobblestone streets learning the country’s colonial history and the effects tourism has had on Peruvian society, culture and economy. We will delve into ancient Inca culture with excursions to Sacsayhuaman and one of the seven wonders of the world – Machupicchu while understanding the impacts of wanderlust.

Day 1| Depart for Peru

Sunday April 19

Sit back and relax as we make our way to Peru!

 

 

Day 2| Cusco

Monday April 20

After landing we will make our way to Cusco, once capital of the Inca Empire, and a city now known for its archaeological remains and Spanish colonial architecture. Today we will have our first introduction to Peruvian culture with a lecture on Culture and Contemporary Society – Preinca, Inca, Colonial & Republic. All lectures will be held at Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola (USIL), a renowned university home to some of the top professors in South America.

Day 3| Cusco

Tuesday April 21

Today we will visit a local market, the Main Square and a marvelous Cathedral. Our Lecture in Peruvian Culture will continue and highlight the last forty years of Peruvian history, dictatorship, terrorism; corruption scandals, chicha culture, gastronomy, languages, religions, etc.

Day 4| Sacsayhuaman

Wednesday April 22

This morning we will have a lecture helping us understand the history of the main discoveries and tourist attractions in Cusco and investigate the public and private organizations in charge to manage tourist attraction in Peru. We will also visit city hall, and Sacsayhuaman . Built by the pre-industrial Incans, the three-tiered walls of the Sacsayhuamán complex are a marvel of engineering with some of the biggest blocks ever found in Incan construction fitted together so tightly, mortar was not even necessary.

Day 5| Machupiccu

Thursday April 23

Today we visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World – Macchupicchu. The site of an ancient Inca city, high in the Andes of Peru Macchupicchu Located at 2430m, the site is often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas”. It’s one   of the most famous and spectacular sets of ruins in the world.
