Ireland – Thriving Communities

While steeped in a rich history of traditions and culture, Ireland is also considered one of the most progressive and forward thinking countries to date. Ireland is routinely commended for it’s comprehensive social service efforts on both national and regional scales. Taking the lead on social responsibility, Ireland was the first country to legalize same-sex marriage as a result of a national public vote in 2015. Take the opportunity to discover the Emerald Isle’s social initiatives and enhance your understanding of community services.

Day 1| Depart for Ireland

Saturday, October 24, 2020

Meet with your fellow Niagara College peers at Toronto airport for the trip of a lifetime. Sit back and relax during our overnight flight to the Emerald Isle!

Day 2| Dublin

Sunday, October 25, 2020

Welcome to Ireland! After dropping our bags off at the hotel, we set off to take in the sights and sounds of Ireland’s capital city-Dublin. Enjoy a hop-on-hop-off tour of this magnificent city and explore 32 of its most popular attractions including the Guinness Storehouse, Trinity College, Grafton Street and the Ha’Penny Bridge.

Day 3 – 5| Castlebar

Monday, October 26 – Wednesday, October 28, 2020

The next four days of your time abroad will be spent in one of Ireland’s fastest growing communities – Castlebar! Named after an 11th century castle, Castlebar began as a small market town and has grown into the prominent community in County Mayo. While in Castlebar we will have the opportunity to learn alongside leaders in Irish community services at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and visit local industries to discover the impact that social services have on Castlebar’s community. This will include the impact of regional initiatives, the benefits of engaging locals to be active, and caring for the vulnerable.

Day 6| Castles

Thursday, October 29, 2020

No trip to Ireland would be complete without touring some of their 30,000 castles. As we travel around the County of Mayo’s rolling green hills that give Ireland it’s Emerald Isle nickname, we will stop at the former homes of royalty, knights and lords. Be sure to have your camera in hand!

Day 7| Cliffs of Moher

Friday, October 30, 2020

Welcoming over a million visitors a year, the Cliffs of Moher are Ireland’s most popular tourist attraction. Towering 120 – 214 meters above the Atlantic Ocean, the cliffs provide a natural panoramic of the Aran Islands of Galway Bay. After our experience at the edge of Ireland, we head south to Galway. Known for its near constant festival-like atmosphere, Galway ranks as the cultural capital of Ireland and is home to 10% of the countries Irish speakers.

Day 8| Dublin

Saturday, October 31, 2020

Our last day in Ireland brings us back to the nation’s capital where we will have the opportunity to reflect on the importance and impact that community services have and the role that they will continue to have with shaping this beautiful country.

Day 9| Depart Ireland

Sunday, November 1, 2020

It’s time to say our final farewell to the amazing Emerald Isle. Until next time!
