W20 Puerto Rico – Hard Hats & Foundations: Community Build

Travel to beautiful Puerto Rico! Aid in hurricane relief efforts, rebuild homes and communities while experiencing the vibrant culture, stunning beaches and lush rain forest of this amazing tropical island. Projects will focus on rebuilding efforts with individual families whose homes were severely damaged by the high winds and flooding attributable to Hurricane Maria.

Day 1| San Juan

February 23, 2020

Touch down in San Juan, Puerto Rico and meet your local guides! After checking into our accommodation at the Big Yellow House, we will have the change to relax and get accustomed to the tropical air.

Day 2| San Juan

February 24, 2020

Today we depart for Viejo San Juan, the colonial heart of one of the oldest European cities of the Americas – take a short stroll through the cobblestone streets of Viejo San Juan to meet Alvin Robles, owner of a local eco-tourism company who will inform the group of Puerto Rico’s vibrant past from an insider’s perspective with an interactive tour of the historic district. Enjoy a traditional Boriqua lunch at one of Old San Juan’s oldest eateries, El Jibarito and cool off from a warm day in the tranquil waters of the Caribbean.  Later we will viewing of a documentary film which chronicles the tremendous impact of Hurricane Maria on the island.

Day 3| Villa Del Rio

February 25, 2020

This morning we load in our vans and drive into the tropical hills above Cerro Gordo and enter the community of Villa del Rio to begin our reconstruction projects. Projects will focus on rebuilding efforts with individual families whose homes were severely damaged by the high winds and flooding attributable to Hurricane Maria. At noon we break for a traditional Puerto Rican lunch prepared by members of the community. In the afternoon we continue our service projects before returning to Cerro Gordo for volleyball, basketball or simple, relaxing downtime.

Day 4| Villa Del Rio

February 26, 2020

We return to Villa del Rio and we continue our hurricane relief efforts which are driven by needs identified by the community members themselves. Lunch will be prepared by the community. After a returning to our service projects in the afternoon we drive back to Cerro Gordo for volleyball, basketball, beach time and salsa dance lessons.

Day 5| Sustainable Forestry Project

February 27, 2020

Today we are introduced to the Sustainable Forestry Project and continue with our hurricane relief efforts before returning to home base for an Iron Chef competition!

Day 6 & 7| El Yunque

February 28, 29 2020

Today we travel to El Yunque – the Carribean Basin’s finest example of tropical rainforrest and wilderness area. We will ascend into the clouds and hike along El Angelito Trail, grab a beachside lunch at Los Kioskos de Luquillo before settling in at our lodging in the coastal community of Luquillo. Dip our paddles into the spectacular bioluminescent bay on a sunset kayaking excursion and have our final group dinner in Fajardo.
